Gaston, Kevin

We all know what politics is about. It isn't about the security of our future. It isn't about the safty of our health. It isn't even about preserving what we hold most dear to ourselves. It is about power. It is about money, but most importantly, it is about control. Understanding the underlying factors in government will help us understand the way the government officials think. It is not a "conspiracy theory", it is just the truth. Some choose to live in the fantasy world of the government being a perfect body, doing only what is just and pure. However, we know that like any system made by man, it will be flawed. Maybe in more ways than others, but the system will be flawed. Keeping our nation as the superior power is the sole purpose of the government. The people will run the country, but mantaining the force that has cause us to become the number 1 nation in the world, is what we must uphold. Even trying to ask the government to do anything other sets us up for failure. Asking the government to regulate businesses, help with global warming, or even keeping the economy in check is beyond the bounds. However, will be promised for the votes. It is not the governments responsibility to make sure our environment is kept. It is the people's responsibility.

Kevin -- You say "Keeping our nation as the superior power is the sole purpose of the government."

Well, not really. The Constitution mentions a few other things.

By the way, one way in which your future will be different from your parents' lives is that the US will no longer be the world's number 1 power. China will be.

Ax Dillingham

So basically, Graham put getting votes ahead of protecting the environment. Politicians are wonderful people.

The world is ever changing... It has only been a couple decades since our parents were our age and the world isn’t the same. It is ever changing and will continue to do so. We are heading for a rough road ahead. We are in debt up to our eyeballs and are in a War that will never be won. Unfortunately by the time most people recognize this it will be too late. Global warming is only one of the issues that is plaguing our society. Unless we elect politicians that will help lead us in the right direction than things will only get worse. Tough and unpopular decisions have to be made and someone needs to make them.

Amy Salmond

Alex, I don't think our planet has changed quite as much as our perception of the world has changed. We know more now than our parents did, and we understand the consequences of it.

Alex Oakes

Amy, yes we are more aware and we have better technology to find out more information but you are kidding yourself if you think that this is the same world that our parents grew up in. It is different in so many ways. We did not have near the amount of natural disasters that we have now. Just look at the number of earthquakes that we have had in the past year as well as the number and severity of hurricanes. The weather isn’t the only thing that has changed; there are many social differences as well. When my parents were kinds they could play outside for hours unoccupied and their parents didn’t have to worry. These days parents are so scared to let their kids play by themselves for fear that they will end up on the 5 o’clock news as a missing child. The economy has also changed gas used to be under a dollar when my mom was a teenager and now we are thrilled if it is under 2.50. . When our parents we young we still had a majority of industry in the United States now everything is overseas. The list goes on and on… The fact is this is not the same world that our parents lived in things have changed. Granted some of that is for the better i.e. technology, but we also are digging an incredibly large hole that we will be fighting to get out of for many years to come. The Planet and our world is most definitely changing.

It's not just getting politicians who are on board with climate legislation, its also about getting corporations to back it. This article illustrates a good concept growing into a tangled web of miscommunication and corruption. For every step forward, modifications had to be made to placate corporations. The whole idea of climate legislation is very complex, requiring better communication, support, and overall execution.

Dr. Crenshaw i was reading your response to kevin and i had a question about the super power issue. How long do you think it will take for china to become that super power? I totally agree on that though everything we get is from china!!! IT BUGS ME SO BAD!!!

Ross

Taylor, I think as of right now China is already higher than the U.S. just based on how much of a consumer the U.S. is. What is made in the States anymore, that is composed of pure U.S. material? I believe nothing. Not even ford is purely a make of the US, it has parts from china and japan in the engine.

This article is SO infuriating for me. This administration has doomed our country, and our world, for at least another two years until we can get someone new into the White House. Obama had the PERFECT opportunity to deal with climate change (it was one of his campaign promises and HELLO, the Gulf Oil Spill would have been the PERFECT opportunity to begin environmental protection legislation) and green technology and he BLEW it because why? Politics. He knew he had a better chance of winning the fight on the less important health care reform than the more pressing impact of the destruction humans are imposing on our environment. Had the White House supported K.G.L. Graham likely would not have left the effort (I definitely won’t be voting for him when he’s up for re-election) and could have gotten the bill passed. Politicians are so worried about dealing with issues that their constituents say are important rather than the issues that ARE important. Part of the problem is so many Americans are completely ignorant on issues like the impact we are having on our environment that are GLOBAL, not just national, issues. That is why this country goes from one extreme to the other every election cycle. If we would just stick with a healthy medium life would be so much better! That is why the great Alexander Hamilton was right to want the elite (by elite I mean educated) governing our country.

We have one Earth, one Amazon River, one ozone layer, one arctic ice sheet, and we are destroying them all! If politicians cannot wake people up about the importance of this issue and start fixing it NOW, we have a duty, a responsibility, a patriotic and moral obligation to ensure that people get in a position of power to do something about this problem that WE will have to deal with in our lifetimes.

Cameron Haines

Politicians will just do anything to get votes instead of sticking with the issues that they truly believe are the most important. That's what I gather from this article and believe that is why we are, at this point in time, not doing anything to help the climate change.
